Industrial and Market Spaces in Medieval Bruges

04-10-2012

From a suburb of artisans and merchants in the shadow of a castle of the Count of Flanders around 850, Bruges developed into a major industrial and commercial centre by 1300. This paper deals with the methodological issues in locating changing spaces for commerce and industry in the development of a major medieval town making use of cartographic, archival, archaeological and toponymical evidence.
