Contextualising Family, Gender and the Economy in later Medieval England

04-10-2012

This paper will set out something of what is distinctive about the family structures, marriage patterns and economic opportunities for females and males in the English later Middle Ages. It will attempt to place these observations in the wider contexts both of Western Europe and of change over several centuries. In particular it will consider the family as a collaborative economic unit and the home as a space in which status and gender dynamics are played out.
